TBI searches home of former MNPD lieutenant in connection with leak of Covenant writings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — When NewsChannel 5 first met Garet Davidson, he was making allegations of misconduct against his former department, Metro Police.

“It’s basically a good ole boy system where rank is biased and people look out for each other,” Garet said in an interview in June.

Now Davidson appears to be the subject of a different investigation. NewsChannel 5 confirms the TBI searched his home in Robertson County in September. Although TBI did not provide further details, this is likely linked to leaked writings from the Covenant hitman.

timeline

It all started in November 2023, when Metro launched an investigation into how several pages from the hitman’s diaries were leaked to a conservative podcaster. The next month, Davidson resigned from the Metro Police.

Davidson in May published its report It is full of allegations against MNPD. That’s when Davidson interviewed me to talk about the report. “I hope there will be significant changes in leadership,” Davidson said at the time.

The next day, June 4, Davidson appeared on television. The Michael Patrick Leahy Show. But instead of the allegations, they mostly talked about the Covenant shooting documents.

“We call it a manifesto, not a single document, but multiple documents?” asked Leahy.

“Over 20,” Davidson said.

On the show, Davidson also confirmed that he had seen excerpts from the shooter’s writings.

“How many of these have you seen?” asked Leahy.

“Excerpts, so probably a few dozen pages,” Davidson replied.

An MNPD lieutenant on 14 June I submitted a document to the court, He claimed that Davidson was the only person who had access to where the hitman’s writings were stored during that investigation. But the lieutenant stopped short of accusing Davidson of being the leaker.

Possible penalties

NewsChannel 5 Legal Analyst Nick Leonardo says if investigators can get conclusive evidence about who leaked the Covenant attacker’s writings, that person could face a felony charge.

“If he was somehow paid for disclosing these documents, then I think that would be a serious crime,” Leonardo said. “If these were leaked before the court order was issued, this is not such a problem. But if these documents are released after being sealed by the court, then additional penalties for contempt and other penalties may follow.”

However, Leonardo emphasized that a search of Davidson’s home could eventually clear his name.

“This might actually be something that exonerates this person: Hey, they didn’t do anything wrong,” Leonardo said.

Other investigation

After Davidson aired his own allegations against MNPD, Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Metro Legal Director Wally Dietz independent investigator review of allegations.

Dietz confirmed Wednesday that the investigation is ongoing and that he had no estimate of when it would be concluded.
