General ministers of the Church of Jesus Christ: Where are they now?

General officers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints generally serve for about five years and include general presidencies of the church. Relief Society, Priority, Sunday School, Young Women And Young Men organizations.

General officers of the church often continue to work in their respective professions during their ministry. After their release, many people work in various roles and jobs in the Church, increasing their commitment to building the Kingdom of God. Church President Russell M. Nelson He served as Sunday School General President from 1971 to 1979 and worked as a surgeon during his tenure, even performing the President’s life-saving heart surgery. Following President Nelson’s role as Sunday School General President, he served as a district representative until 1984, when he was appointed to the Quorum of the Twelve. On January 14, 2018, President Nelson became the 17th president of the Church.

According to their written biographies, at least seven of the 17 men who have served as Church presidents had served as general officers before their presidential service.

Joy D. JonesThe former Primary General President of the church currently serves as assistant to the Temple Matron of the Draper, Utah temple. In his ministry he helps gather Israel on both sides of the veil.

Richardson hosted a Q&A panel of young adults at this year’s Religious Educator conference in hopes of helping educators understand the needs of younger generations.

“I hope every teacher will be filled with confidence to invite others to come and see the Savior in person,” Richardson said at the conference.

Elaine S. DaltonThe former Young Women General President of the church served in general assemblies or presidencies for more than 15 years. Today, he is president of the Stella H. Oaks Foundation.

Ahmed CorbittServing in the Young Men’s General Presidency, he was released in April 2023 and later received the title of General Seventy. Today, he serves as primary advisor to the North America Southeast Region Presidency.

In September, Corbitt and Eubank joined Elder Ulisses Soares at the G20 Interfaith Summit. At the summit, Corbitt spoke of eliminating “religious bigotry” and increasing “religious freedom.”


Adrian OchoaThe former second advisor of the Young Men’s General Presidency was known as General Seventy Seventy after this duty. He held this position until August 2024, when he was given honorary status.

After his service, Stephen W OwenThe former Young Men General President has been appointed as the second counselor of the Provo Utah Temple presidency. He served in that role until renovations began earlier this year.

Although serving as a general officer is not a lifelong assignment, these devoted students showed what it means to dedicate everything to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
