ALEA says suspect opened fire during police chase in central Alabama

A Montgomery County man was arrested after authorities say he opened fire on law enforcement during a confrontation in central Alabama.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday, an ALEA trooper attempted to stop a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck on US 231 near County Road 7707 in Pike County. When the driver did not stop, a chase ensued.

The pursuit ended when the driver crashed onto Alabama 94 in Montgomery County.

After the accident, there was tension between the driver and the police.

ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation, SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Unit responded as well as Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies.

Maxie Doyal Evans, 47, of Ramer, was armed with a handgun and opened fire on officers, ALEA Lt. Jeremy Burkett said. No one was injured. After negotiations, Burkett said Evans was taken into custody without further incident.

Evans was taken to Southern Baptist Medical Center in Montgomery for treatment.

He faces weapons charges as well as attempted escape charges, Burkett said. Once he is released from the hospital, Evans will be booked into the Pike County Jail.
