Authorities are investigating a homicide at the Merced County Jail after an inmate was found unresponsive.

Around 3:45 p.m., Nov. 3, Merced County Jail detention officers found 26-year-old inmate Edward Ramos unresponsive in one of the jail’s holding cells, according to Deputy Michael Domingue.

Officials said that in addition to medical personnel at the scene, Riggs Ambulance Service also responded to the incident and attempted to take life-saving measures. It was determined that Ramos died at the scene.

According to Domingue, Ramos was found in one of the prison’s four-person holding cells and had multiple wounds on his body. It is unclear how many other people were in the cell when he was found. According to authorities, Ramos had been in custody since October 27, but authorities did not disclose what charges the man was being sentenced to.

Domingue said jail cells within the facility are monitored by surveillance officers as well as security cameras. The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Bureau is investigating the death in cooperation with the Merced County District Attorney’s Office.

“This was a death in custody and we want to make sure we do a thorough investigation,” Domingue said. “The Treasurer’s office assists us with all types of homicide investigations, whether in custody or out.”

The death will be investigated the same way the agency investigates any death, officials said. According to Domingue, investigators will work to talk to all witnesses, check video footage and body-worn cameras at the facility, and review records kept.

“This will attract as much attention as any other murder,” Domingue said.

It is unknown if any suspects have been identified, according to Domingue. The last recorded death in custody occurred in June, when an inmate died of natural causes, authorities said.
