Canada receives $100 pure gold coin celebrating the end of World War II

The Royal Canadian Mint has introduced a new solid gold coin, a stunning tribute to the role of Canadians at the end of the Second World War.

History buffs and coin collectors will want to own this new design, which celebrates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

Towards the end of the war, the First Canadian Army went to the Netherlands from 1944 to 1945; here they brought freedom and relief to Dutch civilians who endured five years of hardship, fighting from town to town and “sometimes from house to house.”

“A must-have for every history buff, this solid gold coin honors the sacrifices and achievements of Canada’s World War II veterans, as well as the resilience of the Dutch people.” website.

Canadian artist Neil Hamelin designed the coin’s reverse, which depicts a hero’s welcome. The design shows a regiment of Canadian soldiers advancing towards a Dutch town. A Canadian soldier kneels down in front of a young girl and offers her a tulip, a symbol of “peace, gratitude and friendship”.

Want to own a commemorative piece of World War II history? It comes with a pretty hefty price tag.
