OpenAI, the influential company that created a stir in the tech world with the launch of ChatGPT, is making headlines once again. This time, the focus was on a major deal that involved the purchase of the Chat Dot Com domain name, one of the oldest web addresses still in existence. OpenAI purchased this domain from Dharmesh Shah, founder and CTO of HubSpot. After the purchase, Chat Dot Com was redirected directly to ChatGPT.

To give some context, Chat Dot Com was first registered in 1996, making it one of the oldest domain names available. Interestingly, Dharmesh Shah had bought this franchise only last year and had invested around US$ 15.5 million for it. Converted to Indian rupees, this means approximately 130 million rupees.

Dharmesh announced in March that he sold the domain name but hid the identity of the buyer at that time. He later shared the details of the sale via social media platform X. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, later confirmed the acquisition in a post, saying only “Chat.com.” The acquisition, with a total value of more than $15 million, represents a major investment for OpenAI. As part of the deal, Shah took a stake in OpenAI but has not yet disclosed full details.

Following the sale, Dharmesh expressed his thoughts on X, describing Chat Dot Com as a highly attractive space with the potential to inspire the creation of successful products or companies. This acquisition positions OpenAI to strengthen its global presence through this iconic space.

Meanwhile, OpenAI introduced a new one Chat history search feature, which is different from ChatGPT’s ‘memory’ feature. The ‘Memory’ function allows ChatGPT to recall information over time, while the search tool is specifically designed to help users quickly find specific conversations without the hassle of endless scrolling. If users want to revisit advice from previous conversations or find answers to unresolved questions, this search feature simplifies the information retrieval process.
