Ian Scarborough convicted of fatally stabbing Billy Carrow in downtown Fresno in 2022

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A judge sentenced 35-year-old Ian Scarborough on Thursday to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of 61-year-old Billy Carrow.

He will serve an extra year in prison for using a knife in the murder.

FresnoCo. “This did not have to happen. It was not necessary. In this court’s opinion, Mr. Scarborough stated that he should not be free on the streets,” said Judge Arlan L. Harrell.

Judge Harrell said there was evidence in 2022 that Scarborough stabbed the victim to death in downtown Fresno following an argument over his girlfriend. Both men were homeless at the time.

But before sentencing, Scarborough’s defense attorney made a motion for a new trial, saying the jury’s verdict might have been skewed.

“Material that they should not have viewed could have affected this decision,” said defense attorney Tina Wang.

The judge disagreed, saying the court had heard the preliminary hearing and trial and believed the 35-year-old committed the crime.

“There is sufficient evidence to show beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Scarborough is guilty of this plea. Therefore, the motion for a new trial is denied based on insufficient evidence,” Judge Harrell said.

Scarborough sat in court in his red jumpsuit and shook his head as the judge denied the request.

He later waived his right to a reparations hearing but still says he is not the killer.

Convicted murderer Ian Scarborough said: “Yes, I didn’t kill this man. I think the family deserves something.”

Scarborough’s defense attorney also tried to reduce the charges from first-degree murder to second-degree murder or manslaughter, but the judge rejected those as well.
