Eastern Local School District superintendent speaks out about failed school tax

REEDSVILLE, OH (WTAP) – East Local School District superintendent Nick Dettwiller discussed the failed school bond issue and tax levy filed on the November 5 ballot.

In the elections, 1,719 voters voted against the tax, while 865 voters voted against the tax.

Dettwiller said the school district has three chances to put the issue to a vote, adding that the board has talked about how to move forward.

“The board asked, ‘Do we want to keep the tax as is and reintroduce it in the spring?'” Detwiller said. “He is discussing the issue,” he said. ‘Do we want to make some adjustments to the point of removing the competition gym?’ There is some wiggle room as far as the replacement part, not much. The state orders this.”

Dettwiller also added that a bond has not been established for the East Local School District since 1996 and that the school will have to renovate in the future due to aging of some of the structures.

“The biggest thing I tell people is that all of our mechanicals and our roof are at or past the end of their life,” Dettwiller said. “We will have to change these roads. We will have to replace the HVAC, windows and doors. This will happen whether we pass the tax or not. If we can pass this and get that $26 million from the state, that would be a huge help for our district. Otherwise we have to take it out of general funds. “Then we’ll have to be very, very careful and probably very conservative with our spending.”
