Auston Matthews suddenly lands on Leafs’ injured reserve with latest update!

Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews will miss his second straight game as the Detroit Red Wings come to town tonight, and head coach Craig Berube said earlier today that his captain could start tomorrow against the Montreal Canadiens. It won’t happen.

Chris Johnston reports that Matthews has just been placed on the Maple Leafs’ injured reserve, which pretty much guarantees he’ll miss tomorrow’s game in Montreal.

“There is no harm in his recovery. The IR move is related to squad management.”

Matthews missed Tuesday’s 4-0 victory over the Boston Bruins and is considered questionable for the team’s weekend games.

The captain, who had shoulder and wrist problems in the past, collected 5 goals and 11 points in 13 matches this season. He last played more than 22 minutes on Sunday, picking up an assist in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild. However, Berube stated earlier this week that his best player is not currently dealing with an ankle problem but that it is important to give him time to heal.

Apparently this is not a setback but a simple business transaction to make room on the roster. As a result, Toronto recalled forward Connor Dewar from a long-term injured reserve conditioning loan. Activated from LTIR.

Leafs forward Max Domi centered the top line between Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies on Tuesday. Anthony Stolarz is expected to be the starter against the Red Wings.
