AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Refugee Language Project in Amarillo announced it has received a grant to offer legal interpreting training through its new program.

The Texas Bar Foundation awarded the grant to support the nonprofit organization’s Community Interpreter Training Program, according to a press release.

The program is designed to train minority language speakers in the Texas Panhandle to serve as interpreters in courts and court-mandated programs, according to the news release.

The nonprofit says program participants will learn about legal terminology, ethics and the specific needs of people involved in court-mandated programs.

General director of the Refugee Language Project, Dr. “We are grateful to the Texas Bar Foundation for its commitment to serving minority language communities in the Texas Panhandle,” said Ryan Pennington. “This grant will allow us to address a critical gap in our community and ensure that speakers of these languages ​​have the right support they need to successfully engage with the legal system.”

The Texas Bar Foundation has donated more than $28 million to law-related programs, the news release states.
