A Colorado father finally returns home to recover after falling ill on a holiday trip and spending weeks in a hospital in Europe.

Guy Matlock, 64, was diagnosed with influenza A, pneumonia and sepsis during a trip to Europe in September.

He was hospitalized in Copenhangen, Denmark. His daughter, Moriah, said he was breathing with the help of a ventilator.

The family tried for weeks to raise money to send him back to the United States. Asking for donations on the GoFundMe page.

On Monday, the family reported that Matlock had arrived at the home. They continue to post updates on his recovery.

“Our parents arrived safely!” The article was read. “Thank you again for all the support and help we received to bring our parents home. Words can never express the gratitude and gratitude we feel for all the donations, shares, messages, phone calls, etc.”

“We feel incredibly lucky to have so much support and access from people.”

A holiday that turned from a holiday into a nightmare

Moriah said her parents took a trip to Europe with another couple in September to celebrate their 37th anniversary. About a week into the trip, his father started feeling sick, but initially thought it was a cold.

His father’s condition rapidly deteriorated and he went to the ship’s infirmary. He was transported to the hospital after the ship declared an emergency and docked at the nearest port.

He later had a heart attack.

Moriah and other relatives, who had never been outside the country before, obtained emergency passports to visit her hospitalized father in Denmark. His physical interaction and communication with her was limited due to the diagnosis.

“It was really heartbreaking to have to talk to my dad that way… I’m just glad I was able to be there for him,” she said in a previous interview with FOX Television Stations. “I’ve never seen my father in such a bad situation that he couldn’t breathe on his own.”

Difficulty getting father back home

Moriah praised the hospital staff in Denmark, but the staff agreed that if her father returned to the United States, he would recover much faster and better, would be at home, surrounded by family, and would not have difficulty understanding a foreign language.

But insurance would only pay for part of the trip home, leaving the family with a $150,000 down payment to cover medical transportation costs from Europe to Colorado.

“He needs medical evacuation to return, which will require a doctor on the plane to assist him,” Moriah said, adding that the cost of transportation might be slightly less if her father makes progress in Europe.

The family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical transportation costs. They also asked people to provide any medical resources or advice that could help the family work through foreign bureaucracies.

Moriah said her father had a big and giving heart and she hoped he would see the same feeling in return.

“He has a great smile and loves to make other people smile,” he said.
