RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Many drivers took alternate routes to avoid construction on Sheridan Lake Road.

As a result, businesses in Autumn Hills Plaza took a hit.

Sara Hill, owner of Autumn Hills Liquor, says her business in the Plaza normally gets more than 12,000 vehicles a day, but that number has been halved since road work began.

Rebecca Goosen, owner of Cutting Edge Meat Market, said the only open entrance to her business at the start of construction was on Sheridan Lake Road.

Hill and Goosen brought these concerns to the City Council.

“We have now made the other road accessible from Catron. It wasn’t initially, so we hope this helps, but a lot of people have already strayed from the path and know they can’t come back that way until they turn on that backup in the last few weeks. ” said Goosen.

John Vanbeek, president of Avid4 Engineering, says entrance access will likely move up and down the street as the work progresses.

“We, the contractor, and the City of Rapid City always do our best to maintain access to the Autumn Hills Plaza, which we are currently in front of. There is a blue business sign at the main entrance to the Autumn Hills Plaza that lists all the businesses in the Plaza, and I think drivers are If they want to go to the Plaza, they should make an effort to look for this sign, which will be the entrance,” Vanbeek said.

Goosen says Cutting Edge Meat Market is experiencing a 5-figure decline each month due to construction, and even though the city complied with its request, business is still down.

“This still won’t help the project be completed any sooner, I wish they could work in the evenings and get the work going and get it done before winter, so at this point we have no idea what the roads will be until April when the road crew returns,” Goosen added.

These local businesses want to reassure everyone that they are still open.

Vanbeek said the Sheridan Lake Construction project will be generally completed next October.
