The 40th annual event of the Dubya World Veterinary Motocross Championship took place on the iconic slopes of Glen Helen Raceway. As usual, the two-day race turned into a truly international event, with cyclists from more than 20 countries lining up throughout the weekend.

More than 30 Pro motos highlighted the weekend with big names filling the gates. Just weeks away from his retirement from professional racing, Phil Nicoletti went 1-1 overall in the 30+ class, just ahead of fellow ex-pro Mike Alessi, who finished second overall with a 2-3 result. Nicoletti set the fastest lap of the race and led every lap of both motos to take the overall victory. Giacomo Redondi finished third overall with a score of 4-2.

“For me, I just finished 18 years of racing,” Nicoletti said at the podium. “Mike (Alessi) is also riding a super fast bike and I rode around outside with a little more power. It’s a vet race and he could race if he wanted to. It’s a good time and it doesn’t really matter if I win or lose; it’s just about being out with the old guys and having fun.” .

KTM’s Ryan Morais took first place in the 40+ Pro class. He struggled just behind former National Champion Mike Brown for most of his first moto race before taking the lead with three laps to go. Morais then led the entire second moto to take the overall win. Brown’s 2-2 mark finished second to hometown star Kris Keefer, who went 3-3.

Brown earned redemption in the 50+ class, where he dominated the field and won both motos by nearly 10 seconds. He kept other important names at bay, such as Kurt Nicoll, who finished second with a score of 2-2, and Rusty Holland, who put together a three-pointer.

More action came from the 30+ 125cc Pro division, where many of the same riders lined up in the small bore screamers. Alessi came away from the race with a big win in Moto1 and held off Nicoletti’s attack in the closing stages. Alessi then took a safe second place in moto two and took the overall with a score of 1-2. Morais won the second moto race, but the 4-1 result was only enough for second place in the general classification. Nicoletti’s 2-3 put him third overall.

The 50+ Pros also had the chance to race two strokes for the 125 50+ Pro class on Sunday. Brown won another title, using his 125cc expertise to take both moto wins in convincing fashion. Nicoll followed Brown in second place with a score of 2-2, while Doug Dubach, the newest recipient of the Edison Dye Lifetime Achievement Award, completed the podium in third place.

Team Canada took first place at the World Nations Cup event with its results in the 30, 40 and 50+ World Cup motorcycles. Riders Todd Minnie, Brock Hoyer and Julian Cerny took top honors against rival nations.CN
