Second raccoon found after escaping from Isle of Wight zoo

The second of four raccoons that escaped from a zoo on the Isle of Wight has been found unharmed.

Four female raccoons emerged from their enclosure at Amazon World Zoo Park in Sandown on Friday morning.

The first missing animal was captured at around 11pm on Friday in Newchurch, close to the zoo.

The zoo announced Saturday night that it was “very happy” to find a second escaped raccoon near the venue’s parrot enclosures.

The zoo said in a social media post: “We managed to trap him at the top of our parrot perch at 6.15pm!

“She is currently indoors (sic) and once checked she will be placed with her two sisters who are also out of performance (one of whose sisters cannot escape the enclosure and is the girl we caught last night).

“We will continue our search throughout the night to locate the other 2 missing Raccoons.”

The zoo said “a huge thank you to all the staff” for their “great teamwork” to save the four animals.

Because raccoons are nocturnal, the majority of rescues occur at night; staff use tracking dogs and drones to locate escaped animals.

The zoo’s chief keeper, Rachel Patrick, said Friday that the public should be careful “especially from 4:30 p.m. and throughout the night.”

He added: “Check your gardens, trees, hedges and sheds, just as you would if you were looking for a lost cat or dog.

“Please do not approach the animals. They are not normally aggressive, but they will be scared.”

The zoo asked anyone who saw the raccoons to take a photo if it was safe to do so, and all reports were sent to the raccoon helpline by phone, text or WhatsApp on 07956 194981.
