Richard Andrew, drummer of Australian pop-rock band Underground Lovers, has passed away. He was 58 years old.

Andrew’s family announced his death on Wednesday in a social media post. His death occurred a week later appeared on social media He had been diagnosed with stage IV metastatic lung cancer.

Andrew’s family wrote: “Our beautiful Richard John Andrew died around 5.25am this morning.” In a post on his Facebook page. “His death, as in life, was epic. His wife Nicolette left this world face to face while singing The Flaming Lips’ song “Do you Realize”. “We are all heartbroken, but relieved that our sweet prince is finally free.”

Underground Lovers also confirmed Andrew’s death in a social media post.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard John Andrew, a stunningly beautiful force of nature,” said Underground Lovers. In her Instagram post she wrote:. “We are numb with pain and sadness. He spent this morning peacefully in his sleep at home with his wife Nicolette. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Andrew joined GBVB in 1988, shortly before the band changed its name to Underground Lovers. In 1992 Underground Lovers won the Australian Recording Industry Association’s Best New Talent award. Andrew also performed on the band’s first three studio albums; these included 1994’s “Dream It Down”, which peaked at #55 on the ARIA charts.

Andrew left Underground Lovers following the release of “Dream It Down” and has performed with several bands in Australia, including Kinderland, Red Textas and Registered Nurse. billboardNews first reported Andrew’s death.

Underground Lovers first disbanded in 2002, but when they reunited in 2009, Andrew rejoined the band. He performed on UL’s next three albums, 2013’s “Weekend”, 2017’s “Staring At You Staring At Me” and “A Left Turn”. In 2019.

Inside his Facebook post Andrew, who announced his cancer diagnosis on October 23, expressed his gratitude for having lived “the most incredible, incredible life” as he bid farewell to his friends and family.

“I have fully come to terms with what the future will be, but that future is likely quite limited and I am in the process of preparing to detonate this mortal coil and head back to the trees,” Andrew wrote. “I cannot overstate enough what an honor and privilege it has been to have known you for the last 58 years and to have lived the most incredible, incredible life.

“I often think lately that the way you die reflects the way you lived, and I just lived such a wonderful life. I will miss you all so much, especially the beautiful and incredible Nikki. I can say once again that I have had the privilege of knowing all of you and that I have been lucky enough to have you in my life as a friend, as a musician, or in whatever way you have been a part of my life.

“It’s been a wild ride and thank you so much for sharing it with me. I will miss you all so much and I love you all so much!” he added.
