BERLIN, CT (WFSB) – Wednesday marks 10 days since a massive wildfire started in Berlin.

As a result of the Hawthorne fire and other similar fires, a statewide burn ban has been imposed.

Officials tried to remind people of this, especially on Halloween Thursday. They said people should avoid lighting bonfires to help prevent more bushfires.

They said there were between 70 and 80 wildfires statewide as of Wednesday morning.

The largest was Hawthorne, which was 30 percent contained as of Tuesday night.

After 10 days, 120 to 130 acres remained a massive fire.

Although not 100 percent confirmed, officials said they believe the Hawthorne fire was caused by a campfire.

As for other wildfires in the state, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said most of them are also caused by human activity.

For this reason DEEP said it was pushing for no burning until further notice.

“As we head into the Halloween holiday weekend, I want to remind everyone not to have bonfires during Halloween,” said DEEP forest conservation officer Tom Trask. “The next few days will really continue to test us with the conditions we’re in right now. We’re asking everyone to be as fire safe as possible.”

Reaction to the Hawthorne fire continued to grow.

A team of 20 people was expected to arrive from Quebec, Canada, on Thursday.

Officials planned to provide an update at noon Wednesday.

They said they would get an inside look at the fire departments on site, the terrain and more.
