Plans to add safeguards are part of Greater Manchester’s Places for Everyone scheme, which zones land for development in nine of the region’s 10 boroughs.

Only Stockport is not included in the scheme.

The South Pennine Moors is a designated conservation area, recognized as important habitat for birds.

Species that the new conservation measures aim to protect include merlins, golden plovers and short-eared owls.

Any proposed development within 1.5 miles (2.5 km) of the prairie would first require habitat surveys to be conducted.

There will also be a development ban within 440 yards (400 m) of the moors if certain criteria are not met.

A separate consultation has also been launched on Holcroft Moss, a conservation area of ​​lowland bogs known as the only area in Cheshire that has never been logged for peat.

The impact of traffic pollution on the immediate area close to the M62 may need to be considered before any development plans are approved.

Nine Places for All local authorities and Warrington Borough Council have also proposed a package of restoration measures to improve the resilience of peat habitat to air pollution.

Consultations will continue until December 12.
