Woman ‘Ghosted’ Given Over $400 in Wedding Gifts by Her Best Friend

A woman reflects on how her friendship with her best friend ended over a wedding gift.

In a post redditThe woman told the “Wedding Shaming” forum how she “ghosted” herself after attending the wedding of her close friend from college, Diane. He and his partner had gifted $400 to the bride and groom and placed the envelope of cash next to other cards at the reception.

“Immediately after the wedding, Diane stopped responding to my messages and ignored me in the group chat,” the poster read.

Six months later, the duo had a complete “explosion”. During their argument, Diane finally admitted why she cut her friend out of her life.

“He finally explained that he was angry with me because I didn’t give him a wedding gift,” the woman said. “That’s why he lost the wedding card, he thought I didn’t give it to him, so he decided to cut me off.”

Even though Diane’s wedding was a few years ago, the poster says that Diane now thinks their friendship is over because she ran into him over the weekend at a mutual friend’s event celebrating their upcoming wedding.

“Diane literally showed up wearing a white dress and a white jacket,” she wrote. “Honestly, I’m so glad he’s out of my life, and I feel bad about how he’ll act at this wedding in the future if he can’t even stay away from white.”

Reddit users think in the comments section that Diane dumping her best friend over her wedding gift was greedy. Others thought the poster was supposed to inform Diane that he left her a cash gift because it might have been stolen.

“It is appalling that someone would cut off a close friend over a gift (or perceived lack of a gift); I think it shows that this person is not a true friend,” one person wrote in part, and another added: “Most families always have a relative with sticky fingers.”

The poster explained in a comment that he didn’t care when Diane told him she left him a few hundred dollars and noted that the box of envelopes was unattended at several points during the wedding.

“I have no idea if any other cards have gone missing, but at this point I don’t really care,” he wrote. “It cost me $400 to know who he really is, and I’m okay with that.”
