A controlled explosion was carried out after Glasgow Caledonian University and Buchanan Bus Station were evacuated following a bomb threat.

It was learned that the police seized assault weapons at the scene. As far as STV News understands, the incident is not currently being treated as terrorism.

The Royal Navy bomb squad was at the scene and a large area of ​​the city center was closed.

Police Scotland said officers were called at around 1.10pm after a suspicious item was discovered.

Surrounding roads were closed and citizens were urged to stay away from the area. The link road to the M8 was closed at Junction 16, but has since reopened.

Following the evacuation of the station, a large cordon was put up around it and the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team arrived on scene.

Killermont Avenue between West Nile Avenue and North Hanover Avenue and Cowcaddens Road between Port Dundas Road and North Hanover Avenue were closed.

Glasgow Caledonian University, on Cowcaddens Road, said students and staff had been asked to evacuate.

An email sent to students said: “Due to an ongoing incident at the Buchanan Street Bus Terminal, we have been asked to evacuate the campus immediately as a precaution.

“Please take your personal belongings with you.

“There is no access to Cowcaddens Road. Staff and students must leave via North Hanover Street, Dobbies Loan or Milton Street.”

Police Scotland confirmed there was a controlled explosion at the scene and nothing suspicious was found.

Three people who were in possession of offensive weapons were detained in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities continue their efforts to return the region to normal.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Three people have been arrested following an incident at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow on Wednesday 20 November 2024.

“At approximately 1.10pm this afternoon, police received a report of a potentially suspicious item being found at the bus terminal. Officers contacted EOD and a controlled explosion was carried out. Nothing suspicious was found.

“As a precaution, the bus station and surrounding buildings were evacuated.

“3 people were detained for possession of an offensive weapon, the investigation continues.

“Officers are working to return the area to normal.”

A spokesman for SPT, which operates the station, said: “I apologize to all of you, Buchanan Bus Terminal is currently closed to passengers whilst police deal with an emergency.”

“Passengers do not have access to the station and there are no buses entering or leaving the station.

“We will inform you when the station reopens. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
