UVA Shooting Suspect Confesses to Killing 3 Students

In Virginia, aggravated murder charges generally carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, while first-degree murder charges carry a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.

“Today’s hearings represent another step in a long and painful journey for the victims’ families and our community,” UVA President Jim Ryan said Nov. 20. “Other people on the bus were also injured.”

A witness told authorities that Jones, a former UVA football player, targeted specific victims; However, authorities have not yet announced a reason.

Jones, who was previously on the radar of UVA’s threat assessment team. The injured victim, Hollins, was Perry’s friend and left when Jones began shooting. But when he noticed Perry hadn’t gotten off, he turned back just as Jones was getting off the bus. Hollins turned around and Jones shot him in the back.

Jones then headed to his car at Scott Stadium and attempted to throw his Glock 9mm pistol onto the roof of a university library. He also threw his jacket and hoodie, two Glock 17 magazines and 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition into the bushes on campus.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Chandler and Perry dead. Davis was taken to the hospital and later died.

Days later, an independent investigation began examining the university’s security policies and procedures. The report was not released due to concerns it could affect Jones’ trial.
