Port Charlotte man breaks into home with knife, leaves dentures behind

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WWSB) – A Port Charlotte homeowner called the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office about a residential burglary in progress after seeing someone break into his home through security cameras he placed around the house.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. on November 17, the suspect entered and exited several times; at one point he picked up a package from the porch.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found 73-year-old Billy Joe Belcher standing on the lanai. Deputies say he appeared drunk but complied with orders.

According to the report, the porch deadbolt had probably been opened by the knife in Billy’s pocket, and the widow’s blind on the laundry room door had three panes broken, apparently Billy had cut his right hand. Blood was also seen on the washing machine inside the room.

Inside the main house, the television was on and Billy’s dentures and cell phone were on the floor in front of the couch.

Several drawers in the master bedroom had been opened, but it cannot be confirmed at this time if anything was taken due to the owner being overseas.

The homeowner, who was out of state, told deputies he told deputies he didn’t know Billy and wouldn’t let him into his home.

Billy was arrested for burglary of a vacant building while armed and transported to prison without incident.
