Residents find no answers to dust concerns

On Monday night, more than 90 residents of the Indianwood retirement community voiced concerns about dust blowing onto their properties from the Terra Lago construction site.

More than 90 residents from the Indianwood community voiced concerns about dust blowing onto their properties from the Terra Lago construction site.

Many spoke at a meeting with the developer’s president, Garcia Companies.

Catherine Giesbrecht was at the meeting but said none of her questions were answered.

“Everything is still up in the air, literally dust and us,” Giesbrecht said.

Before the meeting, some residents told WPTV reporter Tyler Hatfield that the dust had gotten so bad that they contacted the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for help.

John Dunning was also at the meeting Monday night and said he expressed concerns about the health of older residents.

“I said, ‘Sir, pay attention to the audience.’ Imagine all these people as your grandparents, your great uncle, your great aunt,’” Dunning said.

Garcia company president Josh Kellam wrote in a statement:

“We have heard the concerns of Indianwood residents and will continue to work with them.”

Kellam added that they are ramping up grass planting and working with state agencies, including FDEP, to resolve any issues.

WPTV has reached out to FDEP but is still working to get a response.

For now, Giesbrecht said he won’t wait and foot the bill to clean up the community’s homes while the dust continues.

“What did you think we were going to do with our limited income?” said Giesbrecht. “Should we continue cleaning for you? I don’t think so.”
