Woman, child dead in suspected murder-suicide and house fire in Lorain County

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a murder-suicide Wednesday morning in Amherst Township.

Just before 7:30 a.m., deputies responded to the 300 block of Broadway Avenue after Amherst firefighters found the bodies of a woman and her 9-year-old son at the home where they were called to a house fire, according to Capt. Robert E. Vansant Jr., from the sheriff’s office.

Vansant said the preliminary investigation showed the woman killed her child and took her own life before setting the house on fire.

“As this investigation continues, it is important to acknowledge the deep loss felt in the Amherst and Amherst Township communities and the Amherst Exempt School District,” Vansant said. “Our thoughts are with those affected during this incredibly difficult time.”

Amherst Exempt School District released the following statement Wednesday:

We are saddened to share the news of the death of one of our beloved primary school students. Moments ago, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department reported an apparent murder/suicide involving a Powers Elementary School student. Although the child’s name has not been released, we are working closely with the Sheriff’s Department as they conduct the investigation.

We will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available. Consultancy and support services will also be provided to our students, staff and the wider community.

We ask that you keep our family and our entire community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,
Mike Molnar
Inspector
