Witness to fatal hit-and-run in Candler County speaks out

CANDLER COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – A Candler County man was killed in a hit-and-run crash last month, and now a witness to the horrific crash is speaking out to find the driver who fled the scene.

“A guy came and nailed him, shot him. It was like the worst thing ever. It was horrible. I can’t even put into words what it was like.”

According to Jarriel, some simple car problems turned deadly on the evening of Oct. 26 on Interstate 16.

“I see these old people breaking down on the side of the road. I said I would come there and help them. I got there and the tire was off the rim. “I was trying to help them get back to their old ways,” he said.

He said it was then, “When he hit him, when he hit the guy, he stopped about 400 yards away from us and pulled over. He was checking his vehicle. “I thought the guy would do the right thing, but that’s not what happened.”

Jarriel said the driver sped away. He followed the driver to 116.

The whole incident happened in a matter of minutes.

“Five minutes later the old lady said let’s just leave it at that,” Jarriel said. “No ma’am, I said, give me five more minutes; I’ll make sure you all leave. He messed with me a bit just because I wanted them to stay. So if I hadn’t told them to come back or give me another five minutes, I feel like they would have left. But when your time comes, it is your time.”

Afterwards, Jarriel tries to help the police find the suspect.

“I put a thousand dollar bounty on him,” he said. “I have $1000. I have two other friends who deposited another $500. This is 2000 dollars. So I hope we find it.”

The Georgia Department of Public Safety released a photo of a white truck earlier this month. They said he was seen wandering near the crash site a few minutes after the incident.

Police are looking for the truck they suspect was involved in the incident and the person driving it.
