Clerks voice concerns after password leak from Colorado Secretary of State’s Office

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The Colorado GOP has released recordings of conversations between County Clerks and the Secretary of State’s Office about election security and leaked sensitive passwords.

“We weren’t going to tell the counties, because we couldn’t tell the counties without it turning into a media storm,” Deputy Minister Christopher Bell said.

“The secretary has completely lost credibility here,” El Paso County Clerk Steve Schleiker said in another recording.

When we asked Schleiker about the records, he said he didn’t know how they came to be, but he stood by what he said. He claims his remarks were intended to promote election security.

“I’m not afraid to sit there and stand up for the security of our election system in El Paso County. With all the changes we’ve made, everything we’ve done to ensure that we’re leading the way in the state of Colorado, we’ve done it with the hope that many of the changes can become Colorado law,” said Clerk Schleiker.

These changes include 24-hour video surveillance of ballot boxes, elimination of outside network connections from counting machines, physical security and other measures taken by the County Clerk.

In the statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the records were responded to with the following statements:

“This brief audio is taken from multiple conversations between the Secretary of State and County Clerks and is a small portion of what Department staff conveyed to the Clerks.

To avoid fueling the massive disinformation environment surrounding the elections, the ministry stated that it must first determine the full scope of the problem in the calls where the voice comes from and finalize its technical and outreach strategy before sharing it. This posting never posed an immediate security risk to voting equipment in Colorado. The Ministry took immediate and appropriate measures to resolve the situation and the elections were held fairly and safely.

“The Secretary regrets this error and the fact that the County Clerks did not first learn of this appointment from the Department.”
