There are some red carpet looks that never go out of style, and Aaliyah’s iconic tiger print Roberto Cavalli dress one of them.

When you became a late R&B and pop star I was wearing the dress at first At the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, the look instantly made fashion history as stars and style enthusiasts referenced the wild and bold dress for generations to come. Even now Tyla leaves its mark on it.

On Sunday, the South African-born artist attended the MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, England, wearing the same Roberto Cavalli dress except for the color. Rather than copying the memorable canary yellow piece made famous by Aaliyah, Tyla wore a sky blue version of the dress.

Other than the color change, the remaining details of the look were virtually indistinguishable from Aaliyah’s 2000 look; From the hooded collar, shaggy fur leg slit and striking black tiger stripe print.

Aaliyah styled her dress with simple black heels with criss-cross straps, while Tyla took her look a step further with shiny black leather heels with cutouts that reached just below her knees. She accessorized further with a silver choker and sparkling bracelet to add a little extra glamor.

In addition to paying homage to Aaliyah, Tyla’s tiger-print look also gave a nod to her loyal fan base, whom she affectionately calls her “Tygers.”

“I love combining tiger print and effortless island vibes; especially in this day and age, because obviously I’m introducing myself to the world and these themes are prevalent in the work we do. “We’re introducing it as part of the Tyla story,” she previously explained. Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s so much fun to make things exciting for the fans. I’m excited to perform more, bring more visuals and content to people, and expand the world we’ve created and let more people in, just like when I was young and a fan. It’s really that genre.” I want to recreate an excitement.

At this year’s MTV EMAs, Tyla took home awards for Best R&B, Best African Performance, and Best Afrobeat.
