Florida Keys woman accused of drowning Schnauzer puppy

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – Deputies in the Florida Keys arrested a woman on aggravated animal cruelty charges Monday afternoon after they say she “intentionally and callously” suffocated a 6- to 10-month-old puppy in a carrier bag.

According to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, deputies responded to the 100 block of Palmetto Avenue in Big Pine Key around 3:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported that 72-year-old Delaine Abee Lowry had strangled her miniature Schnauzer.

Authorities said he “forcibly submerged” the dog in a blue, 5-gallon plastic bag “under murky rainwater” and suffocated it “until it was motionless and dead.”

The neighbor told deputies that Lowry came to his house and asked if he could bury the dog in his yard, the report states. After deputies told him no, Lowry said, “I’m going to throw him over the fence.”

A deputy reportedly went to Lowry’s home and gave him a “white plastic shopping bag” containing the dead puppy.

The deputy said he told him he “had to kill” the 2- to 3-pound dog because the dog “was going to kill him.” Authorities said he then “tried to get the dog back” and claimed he was “going to bring him back to life.”

Deputies said Lowry’s husband told them he had “no idea” that he had strangled the dog and that he didn’t say anything “out of the ordinary” that day.

When deputies entered Lowry’s yard, which was filled with “garbage, damaged furniture, and overgrown trees and bushes,” the bag was “filled with dirty rainwater,” the report states.

It was stated that Lowry refused to talk to MPs. One online profile lists him as a Schnauzer breeder.

Jail records show Lowry was being held at MCSO’s Key West jail as of Tuesday morning; He had no bonds listed.

He is scheduled to appear in court on December 5.
