Skenes was awarded the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year award, beating out Jackson Merrill of the San Diego Padres and Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Skenes’ MLB debut has been pushed back more than a month until the 2024 season due to the Pittsburgh Pirates keeping him in the minors. They tried to delay free agency by a year, but it came to nothing because the top two finishers in the Rookie of the Year voting received an award. automatic year of service under the collective bargaining agreement, regardless of when they are called.

When Skenes was finally called up on May 11, he never looked back.

The 22-year-old threw six no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs in his second career start. it just happened fifth rookie To start the All-Star Game in MLB history. Hideo Nomo was the last major league pitcher to achieve this feat in 1995.

The Pirates are still trying to build their roster around their best players, including Skenes, but they found what every MLB team hopes for.

Skenes was the No. 1 starter the moment he stepped onto the big league plate. He proved that with a historic first season that earned him the NL Rookie of the Year award, becoming the first Pirates player to win the award since Jason Bay in 2004.

Gil was rewarded for his efforts by playing a key role with the New York Yankees, winning the Rookie of the Year award behind Luis, who finished the regular season with the best record in the American League.

The 2024 season was actually the second time the Yankees tried to insert Gil into the starting rotation. He pitched well in his first stint as an MLB hitter with a 3.07 ERA in six starts late in the 2021 season, but an elbow injury requiring Tommy John surgery in early 2022 kept him out of the major leagues for two years.

After a strong spring training, Gil earned the final spot in New York’s starting rotation. He looked like a potential Cy Young contender in the first half with a 3.17 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 102.1 innings.

Things got even harder for Gil, whose control began to wane after the All-Star break. He struck out 28 in 49.1 innings and posted a 4.20 ERA in his last 10 starts.

Despite some potential fatigue, Gil’s overall numbers in 2024 were quite impressive. His 3.50 ERA was the best among all Yankees pitchers who started at least 20 games.

Gil’s .189 batting average was the highest among pitchers who pitched at least 150 innings during the regular season. second lowest In MLB. Hunter Green of the Cincinnati Reds had a .183 batting average in 150.1 innings pitched.

Gil became the 10th Yankees player to win the Rookie of the Year award, breaking the gap with the Atlanta Braves. second most in MLB history. The Los Angeles Dodgers are far ahead of everyone else with 18 wins.

This marked the first time a Yankees player was named AL Rookie of the Year since Aaron Judge in 2017.
