Orioles first baseman among potential offseason trade chips

The Baltimore Orioles have some work to do this summer if they want to remain a postseason contender.

After winning 91 games and sitting at the top of the American League Wild Card standings, they were swept by the Kansas City Royals in the first round. With Corbin Burnes now a free agent, they now have some questions to answer.

The Orioles could potentially re-sign Burnes, sign another pitcher, or even trade for a pitcher. However, if they go the trade route, they could eventually find themselves ready to part ways with lead goaltender Ryan Mountcastle.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller listed him as a potential trade chip.

“With Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo making their MLB debuts last season and C/1B Samuel Basallo not far behind, the Orioles have a significant surplus of IF/DH options,” Miller wrote.

“Mouncastle’s return won’t be anywhere near what he could achieve for Mayo, but there’s also no shortage of teams in need of a starting baseman. Baltimore may have to wait until Pete Alonso, Paul Goldschmidt, Christian Walker, Anthony Rizzo and Carlos Santana all arrive.” “He signed as a free agent, but more than five teams are also looking for this player.”

The Orioles may not get an ace from Mountcastle unless he packages him with one of their best young players. However, there is a logjam on the position players side, especially infielders.

This could make Mountcastle expendable. If they are traded, they could go with one of their top prospects in the first place.

If traded, he could give them a starter at center-back, but it will be interesting to see if teams bid on him to fill their first base need.
