Deputy shot and killed driver after gun drawn at traffic stop: HCSO

A traffic stop in Tampa Saturday night led to a deputy-involved shooting, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

At 9:15 p.m. Saturday, deputies conducted a traffic stop for an unspecified tag at West Hillsborough Boulevard and Elliot Drive in Tampa.

According to body-worn camera footage, Deputy Jared Mincemeyer, 26, approached the vehicle and demanded to see the man’s hands.

The driver initially complied with the rules, the sheriff’s office said.

“However, the situation quickly changed when he retrieved a firearm from the right side of his seat… When he did so, he exited the vehicle with the firearm, at which point our deputy pulled back and began firing multiple shots at the suspect.” said Col. Nikki Bosley of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Sunday, Sheriff’s office releases body camera footage from an MP and a secret MP.

The suspect’s face is blurred because his relatives were not informed. The sheriff’s office said it will release the sheriff’s identity once notification is completed.

Driver St. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital and pronounced dead.

“Our deputy was simply doing his job trying to protect our community when he had to defend himself against a gunman,” Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “No lawmaker wants to face this situation, but when faced with a deadly threat they must take action to protect themselves and others. Our lawmakers risk their lives every day to keep our community safe. It is unfortunate that criminals make these choices. It can lead to fatal consequences.”

Mincemeyer has no prior use of force. He has been with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since October 2022.

“This is a stark reminder that this is not a routine law enforcement traffic stop,” Bosley said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, per standard protocol.
