‘Bedbug plague’ hits holiday destinations and British tourists, but hotel owners say pests were brought in by other guests

Hotel owners have blamed guests for a ‘plague’ of bedbugs that left hundreds of holidaymakers suffering bites and wounds at a hotel in Tenerife.

Sun lovers, including Brits abroad, criticized ‘disgusting’ bedroom conditions; some requested to be moved five times, while others moved to another hotel.

Angry guests shared photos of the bugs found in bedrooms at the four-star Blue Sea Puerto Resort Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, and graphic images of red dew bites caused by the pests.

At least 25 guests took legal action for compensation.

Hotel bosses blamed guests for bringing the ‘plague’ to the property.

They admit there is a problem with infestations but insist the rooms are not dirty.

Complaints about the bedbug infestation were first raised in January but bookings have continued to be taken since then.

Staff claim the problem is under control, but holidaymakers are still finding bugs in the rooms.

Martin Ives’ wife, Donna Schneider, returned from the facility last month. The couple paid £2,000 for a 14-night stay.

Martin, 49, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, said: ‘We were moved to our rooms three times before we requested to be moved to a different hotel.

‘I was bitten a few times while staying in the first room but the bedbugs in the second room were really bad.

‘After my first night there I woke up and was covered in these. ‘It was disgusting and the holiday was nothing short of a disaster.’

‘This place should have been closed while it was disinfected. When we left a room, they would place the new guests in the room we just left.

‘It was very bad. They eventually took us to a different hotel but by this time I was covered in bites.

‘I stayed in my room for the rest of the holiday because everyone was staring at me when I went out.’

Martin, 48, added: ‘I still have the bite now and some scarring.

‘We shouldn’t have stayed and should have booked a flight home. It was that bad.”

The Mabon family returned home from the resort in July after a two-week holiday; this holiday cost over £2,300. After being bitten on the first night of their stay, they complained to reception staff.

Jean-Marie Mabon described their rooms as ‘disgusting’.

The 57-year-old retail manager said: ‘It’s outrageous that they expect people to pay for this mess.

‘We were itchy, uncomfortable and the staff just shrugged us off. ‘We’ll never set foot in there again.’

Her husband Scott, 63, added: ‘Cleaners were in the room most days. How did they not notice that the room was full of bedbugs?

‘The hotel has to be closed, but travel agencies are still sending guests to the hotel.

‘It was weird because the reception was spotless but the corridors and rooms were awful.’

Scott, from Largs, added: ‘It totally ruined our holiday and we were counting down the days until we could go home.

‘We threw away the suitcases as soon as we got back because we didn’t want to invade our home.’

Aaron Coote and his partner Tanya Hadfield, 37, were left with bites on their backs, shoulders, legs, hands and necks when they booked a week’s holiday in February.

Aaron, 42, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, said: ‘We were bitten on the very first night. We must have been bitten over 100 times.

‘We woke up with red, swollen bites. It was painful.

‘They were coming off the wallpaper and bed sheets.

‘The staff didn’t seem to care. They offered to freeze our luggage for three days and moved us to another room.

‘We weren’t the only ones having problems. Other guests also suffered bites and were moved to different rooms.

‘It ruined our holiday because we spent the rest of the holiday in constant fear of waking up and finding more bedbugs.’

Aaron, who spent £2,100 on the all-inclusive package, added: ‘It was awful and obviously a huge problem throughout the hotel.

‘The hotel should be closed and disinfected.

‘This whole ordeal was an absolute nightmare. ‘I was still finding new bite marks when I returned home and it had a really negative impact on my physical and mental health.’

A spokesman for Blue Sea Puerto Resort Hotel said: ‘Bedbug problems are taken very seriously.

‘And although there have been cases of bedbugs in our hotel, this is not due to lack of cleanliness, this problem has come to us via the luggage of many travelers from France and Central Europe.

‘The plague came to the Canary Islands from Europe and we are trying to strictly comply with hygiene standards and protocols to offer our guests a problem-free holiday.

‘When they are detected in rooms, a strict destruction protocol is put into place.’

Michael Walker, a partner at the Holiday Claims Office, said: ‘It is deeply concerning that holidaymakers continue to be sent to this hotel by tour operators despite being aware of a bedbug infestation.

‘Many of our customers report similar experiences, suffering a significant number of bites, often resulting in long-term scarring.

‘The hotel unfortunately does not seem to take this seriously and is failing to address the problem.

‘This is more than just an annoyance. Guests are subjected to what can only be described as holiday torture and they deserve compensation. It’s time for the authorities to intervene.’
