Google searches on Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM JAY) increased after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched health insurance for senior citizens aged 70 years and above under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

PM JAY registration: More than 10 lakh senior citizens aged above 70 years registered

In a major milestone, over 10 lakh senior citizens aged 70 years and above have registered for the newly launched Ayushman Vay Vandana Card, enabling them to access free healthcare under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

This achievement came within three weeks of the card being launched by PM Modi on October 29. Around 4 lakh registrations were made by women under Ayushman Vay Vandana Card.

Since the launch of the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card, treatments worth Rs 9 million have been authorized and benefited over 4,800 senior citizens aged 70 years and above, including over 1,400 women. These treatments cover a range of conditions, including coronary angioplasty, hip fractures/replacement, gallbladder removal, cataract surgery, prostate resection, and stroke, among others.

Ayushman Card eligibility criteria

Those who qualify under the scheme can create their Ayushman card at any time, i.e. throughout the year. Eligible beneficiaries can generate the card themselves using the Ayushman App or visit the nearest CSC or resident hospital to generate their Ayushman card.

New Different Card: Under the EU PM-JAY programme, a new and different card is being provided to eligible senior citizens aged 70 years and above.

Scope of Completion: Senior citizens in families currently covered by AB PM-JAY will get additional supplementary cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per annum. This burden will be theirs and they will not have to share it with other family members under the age of 70.

Family Scope: Coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per annum on a family basis will be provided to senior citizens who are not part of the existing AB PM-JAY family insurance.

Scheme Selection: Senior citizens who already benefit from other public services health insurance Schemes like Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) have the option to continue their existing programs or opt for AB PM-JAY.

Eligibility for Private Insurance: Senior citizens covered by private health insurance policies or Employees’ State Insurance scheme are also eligible to benefit from AB PM-JAY.
