Danté Leverock Aims for 50 Bermuda Hats

Danté Leverock says he is proud to have come close to breaking the record of 50 caps for the Bermuda national football team.

The experienced defender will play for the 48th time with the Bermuda jersey in the Concacaf Nations League match against Antigua and Barbuda in the Dominican Republic today (November 16).

Former Bermuda captain Leverock retired from international duty in May 2021 and reversed his decision a month later.

The 32-year-old player, now in the final phase of his career, wants to leave a lasting legacy for the team and its emerging talents.

“I know my time as a Bermuda player is over,” Leverock told Bernews. “I enjoy mentoring and helping young players become successful like Harry (Twite).

“My goal is to get to 50 points and see what happens after that. That would be a special milestone.”

Bermuda’s most capped player, Reggie Lambe, reached the milestone of 50 appearances in the Concacaf Nations League match against French Guiana a year ago, setting a benchmark for players like Leverock to follow.

Bermuda must beat Antigua to keep the pressure on League B group D leaders Dominican Republic, who they will face in their final match of the season on Tuesday as they look to return to the Gold Cup.

Should Bermuda finish second in their group, they are likely to qualify for the Gold Cup qualifying rounds, their gateway to the prestigious regional tournament.

Leverock captained the team that made history by qualifying for the competition for the first time in 2019.

“We are ready to work to get the job done,” Leverock said. “We won three qualifiers and that helped boost our confidence.

“Our goal is to win the next two matches and advance to the Gold Cup,” he said.

Nahki Wells boosted Bermuda’s promotion hopes after returning to action by scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 home win over Dominica last month.

He missed the second leg against Dominica as he had to prepare for Bristol City’s away game against Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship.

He is likely to feature in Bermuda’s next two matches, with City’s next match at home to Burnley on 23 November.

“Nahki is a leader on and off the field and one of the most experienced players Bermuda has,” added Leverock.

“He helps young players in training and they see his movements and his ability to score goals.

“We know if we can put the ball in the right position he will score. That gives us a new level of confidence.”
