Salisbury teen charged in fatal crash day after car chase

A 33-year-old Concord woman died in a fatal car crash and a 17-year-old Salisbury man has been charged in connection with the crash, the NC State Highway Patrol said Friday afternoon.

The statement states that Salisbury police attempted to stop the driver of a Red Mazda CX9 on Jake Alexander Boulevard around 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 30, but gave up the chase when the vehicles reached the Davidson County line north of Interstate 85.

Reports do not specify the cause of the chase, but reports say the same vehicle was involved in a fatal crash on NC Hwy at 7:37 a.m. on Oct. 31. 150 in Davidson County.

The Mazda’s passenger, Kayla Lynn Taylor of Concord, died at the scene of the crash.

During the investigation, state troopers were notified that two teenagers were being treated at Rowan Regional Hospital in Salisbury for injuries related to a car crash and that the two may have been in the Mazda. Salisbury police, the NC State Bureau of Investigation and state troopers confirmed they were indeed involved in the crash.

Kaiell Zachkery Thompkins, 17, of Salisbury, was the driver of the Mazda at the time of the crash and was charged and placed in a child welfare facility in Concord, according to state police. Specific charges were not disclosed.

The road in the region was closed for approximately 3 hours during the investigation at the scene of the accident.S.

The highway patrol is continuing to investigate.
