Nearby churches make room for Albany congregation after devastating fire

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany wants those who attend Elijah Missionary Baptist Church to still have a place to worship following a devastating fire at the 144-year-old building.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany wants people who attend Elijah Missionary Baptist Church to still have a place to worship after death. A devastating fire gutted the 144-year-old building.

Bishop Avery Comithier received a phone call Friday morning from Bishop Edward Scharfenberger, who is currently out of the country.

During the speech, Bishop Scharfenberger said: “We will do whatever we can.”

The diocese is offering congregational space at some Albany churches so people can continue to worship. These plans are still coming together right now, but this weekend people will be able to go to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Eagle Street in Albany.

Bishop Comithier said he was very grateful for the help.
