Two new affordable housing projects are underway in Edmonton

Two new affordable housing projects are moving forward with help from the federal government.

“We know the need for housing is incredibly high in Edmonton, and projects like this will help provide safe, affordable homes to those in need,” said Coun. Ashley Salvador.

One of the projects will take place in his ward. St. Paul Lutheran Church, 9155 79 Ave. He donated his property to the Right at Home Housing Society.

“This project includes 11 units of affordable housing, consisting of seven one-bedroom units, two two-bedroom units and two four-bedroom units, two of which are accessible,” said Marisa Redmond, executive director of Right at Home Housing Society. .

“The mother, the father, or whatever combination thereof, and their children will be able to be in one of these apartments, one of these houses, for $550 a month,” said Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages.

“It’s extremely affordable. You can really help a family get back on their feet this way,” he added.

The Minister announced that $2.8 million in federal funding will be provided to implement the project.

“It also provides flexible community space that can be used by residents and community groups, and this will be designed to bring together the King Edward community park,” Boissonnault said.

Another $6.4 million will go to the Métis Capital Housing Corporation to provide 127 temporary homes for people in need.

“Projects like this not only allow us to create jobs and put people to work, but they also build people’s capacity to contribute to the economy,” said Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.

“When people have a safe place to call home, their stress levels are low, they can think about things outside of their daily struggles, and when they do this, people not only contribute to their own well-being and their own success, but they also make society a better place,” he added.
