Here’s how to protect your home from natural gas leaks

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — From the moment a teenager lived He died in a house explosion caused by a natural gas leak in southern Jordan. Many share concerns about the safety of their own homes.

“When you think about it statistically, and I mean the statistics are very cold in a situation like this, statistically the odds of this happening in your home are incredibly low,” said Utah State Fire Marshal Ted Black.

While home explosions caused by leaks are extremely rare in the state, Black is urging homeowners to take precautions around natural gas.

“We highly recommend keeping all tanks one meter away from gas appliances, your furnace, water heater and fireplace if you have one,” he said.

Utahns should also ensure that all devices are properly maintained.

Investigators are still working to determine the source and ignition source of the natural gas leak in South Jordan, Black said.

“We fix it, we can fix it, and then we can make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said. “And that’s the goal here. We investigate fires to make things better for people.”
