The wait is over. Carry On cocktail bar Pretty Good Concepts It took flight on Friday, November 15.

Located on the corner of First Avenue and Washington Street (next door to Wren and Wolf), the bar is inspired by vintage luxury airplanes used during the “golden age of travel” in the 60s and 70s.

Every experience begins at the “ticket office”. Guests check in at Wren and Wolf’s host booth, purchase a ticket, and line up in front of the Carry On to get inside.

The excitement of entering this bar cannot be overstated. It’s not much different than entering Narnia through the wardrobe. The logo adorning one wall was woven by local textile artist David Nott, and further inside the décor resembles a walnut-and-gold airplane cabin. There are no bar stools here, just booths and lounge chairs attended by “flight attendants” dressed heavily in 1970s attire, with geometric patterned dresses, matching belts and boots, and elegant neckerchiefs.

Fun details abound. If you dare to listen to conversations in the cockpit, remove the phone from the wall. And watch out for the penguin.

Carry On’s mascot is a penguin that appears in three different forms. “The architecture thing is the penguin head on our door, we have the flying penguin logo on the menu and Mr. Penguin has a bow tie and he’s our playboy bunny,” one of the co-owners said. Teddy Myers in question.

Why, you may reasonably ask. “Because it is a flightless bird and the symbol of the flightless plane,” he said.

Although it never leaves the ground, the overall effect of an evening spent at Carry On is extremely impressive.

What to expect at Carry On?

Carry On flies customers between the two cities every year. This year, guests “take off” from San Francisco and land in Mexico City after a 90-minute experience.

After the guests take their seats, the captain makes an announcement and the journey begins. During takeoff, the seats shake and the windows offer views of the runway turning into clouds. Even the bathrooms are similar to those on the plane, although larger. But don’t get carried away by Mile High ideas. The captain specifically forbids bathing shenanigans, one person at a time. The flight attendant emergency seat is strategically positioned across from the bathroom.

When the martini light comes on, flight attendants appear with snack carts and prepare complimentary martinis at the seatside. (Watch out for penguin shakers.)

What’s on Carry On’s menu?

To create an era-appropriate drink menu, Myers recruited Jax Donahue, a talented and creative mixologist with plenty of experience researching and developing historic cocktails from his time at the Century Grand. Voted America’s best bar In 2023.

For Carry On, he modernized classic drinks like the Rusty Nail, made with single malt whiskey, rye, mead, peaches, sesame paste and thyme. And he developed recipes inspired by the city of departure (in this case, San Francisco) and the city of arrival (Mexico City).

References to San Francisco include a gin and tonic made with gin, aperitif, black cardamom, tarragon, grapefruit, white wine, cinnamon and tonic. A White Russian made with tequila, vodka, vanilla liqueur, pineapple, chicory, espresso, amaro, pandan and oat milk calls out to Mexico City.

“These drinks are simplified, so the goal is to add elements to them without making them cloyingly sweet or heavy,” Donahue said.

Beer, wine and soft drinks are also available.

Currently, the bar serves “airplane snacks” like rojo and verde peanuts, representing Mexico, and Ghirardelli-dipped cookies and sea salt cookies, a nod to San Francisco.

At Carry On, tasting is believing

If you suspected this bar was all talent and substance, one sip of Donahue’s was enough to change my mind. The cocktails are excellent, light and layered with flavour. These are extremely sophisticated, true works of art in glass. I recommend trusting the mixologists; They’re bound to change your mind about at least one drink you thought you didn’t like. This is a cocktail journey worth taking.

Happy travels.
