Protesters in Serbia demand accountability for roof collapse that killed 14 people

Residents in northern Serbia stopped traffic and stood in silence to remember the 14 victims of the railway roof collapse two weeks ago and to take account of the tragedy.

On Friday, dozens of protesters carried a large black banner and blocked intersections outside the central train station in the city of Novi Sad. On November 1, the building’s exterior roof suddenly collapsed, killing 14 people and injuring three.

Many people in Serbia blamed the accident on widespread corruption, which they said led to sloppy work on station building renovations.

Authorities promised a thorough investigation and the Serbian government’s construction minister tendered his resignation.

But there were no arrests, and critics accused populist officials of evading responsibility.

Thousands of people have participated in protests in both Novi Sad and Belgrade over the past two weeks.

Many in Serbia doubt that anyone will be punished for the tragedy, as the populist government maintains tight control over both the police and the judiciary.

On Friday, opposition MPs in Belgrade also joined the silent protest, blocking traffic in front of the parliament building in the capital for 14 minutes.

In Novi Sad, a group of activists threw black balloons symbolizing the 14 victims into the air.

A 6-year-old girl was among those who died as a result of the roof collapse.

It was learned that the three injured people had amputation surgery and their life-threatening conditions continued.
