KZN residents set to voice concerns over Eskom tariff increase

The electricity producer is demanding a 36% increase next year from the energy regulator.

He says the tariff increase will help improve electricity generation, transmission and distribution while also allowing the utility to become more financially sustainable.

National energy regulator NERSA is launching public hearings on the proposed increase in the Western Cape on Monday.

The KZN leg will be held in Durban on Thursday and Friday.

Many civil society groups, organizations and political parties strongly opposed the proposed increase.

Prosecutor Kevin Mileham said they submitted the first batch of more than 200,000 signatures from South Africans to NERSA on a petition calling for the application to be withdrawn.

“We see this as a strong call from South Africans across the country for urgent action on the ongoing energy crisis. This petition signals the frustration and fatigue of millions of people who grapple every day with the economic and social impacts and costs of sky-high electricity prices.” ” “It is a living crisis, the recent devastating load shedding and unreliable power supply in hundreds of municipalities.”

Motsi Khokhoma, from the organization Cry of the Xcluded, urged South Africans not to let the opportunity to share their views go to waste.

“In other words, we’re pushing the unemployed and poor working-class people into a corner where, if they resist, they become a ticking time bomb. And now, when you buy R10’s electricity, it actually becomes less than four units, and when you increase that by 36 per cent, R10 won’t buy anything.” ”
