Secret results of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

A still from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

One of the most talked about episodes of The Dark Side of Reality TV was Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which revealed what happens to buyers when the cameras stop rolling.

Although the show aims to help families in need by renovating their homes, the docuseries uncovers the devastation caused by these costly changes, from crippling debt to family problems.

The episode focuses on the original Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, hosted by Ty Pennington, on ABC from 2003 to 2012.

Former participants whose homes were renovated in the series appear on The Dark Side of Reality TV to share their side of the story. For some, the bills were now too much.

And before you start blaming those involved, the Okvath family revealed in Season 2 didn’t even know what happened.

They became involved in the series after their eight-year-old daughter, Kassandra, wanted the walls of the children’s hospital where she was treated for cancer to be painted.

When the family was sent away, the Extreme Makeover team demolished their house to make way for a much more luxurious mansion; This left them in huge debt.

Mother Nichol Okvath explains: “It was an expensive house. Our first electric bill was $2,200, which was much more than our mortgage ever had. “I almost died too.”

Moreover, the family was just one of many families that repeatedly faced intruders. “There was a time when we locked the doors, and when I went up to one of the doors there was a man and there was a hammer and I started screaming like this wasn’t real life,” she adds.

“Is this serious? I can’t tell you how many times the police have been called to break in and try to break in. “It was traumatic for me.”

Then there was the Higgins family, a group of five siblings whose parents died in 2005, less than a year before appearing in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

In the docuseries, Jeremiah Higgins describes the Leomiti family who accepted the show’s exploitation of them.

The Higginses all moved out of the renovated property shortly after the episode aired, based on the “goodwill” story of a family taking in orphaned siblings.

They later sued Leomitis for allegedly stealing houses and cars given to them by the producers, but they were unsuccessful.

As Jeremiah puts it, “The same people we laugh with, the same people who care about telling our stories, the same people who don’t care about what happens to us.

“We have no place to stay and we are children. The story that we were happy and lived there still continues. “People see us jumping around, but we don’t have anything yet.”

America’s Next Top Model is now in the line of fire

In the teaser for the upcoming episode, former America’s Next Top Model contestant Lisa D’Amato describes how her experience on the show “ruined my dreams.” This made everyone in the world hate me.
