A woman was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a registered nurse and overseeing the care of nearly 60 patients at a Burbank hospital, authorities said.

Burbank police detectives say this isn’t the first time Amanda Leeann Porter, 44, of Virginia has pretended to be a nurse.

Before the incident at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Porter was out on bail and released from the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of committing a similar crime at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, according to the Burbank Police Department.

Burbank police detectives said during their investigation they learned that Porter had obtained employment at various local hospitals using a variety of false identities.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Porter on charges of identity theft, false impersonation and grand larceny, according to Burbank police.

Detectives said he was arraigned Wednesday and was being held — this time without bail — at the L.A. County Central Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.

Detectives said Porter worked at Providence Saint Joseph from April 8 to May 8 and received two paychecks during that time. Detectives said hospital staff contacted the Police Department in May after discovering that Porter was impersonating an actual registered nurse who lived out of state.

Detectives said Porter was also on federal probation in Virginia for a fraud violation.

In 2017, a woman named Amanda Porter-Eley pleaded guilty to impersonating a nurse and committing bank fraud in Virginia. US Department of Justice.

The Burbank Police Department has not confirmed whether Amanda Leeann Porter and Amanda Porter-Eley are the same person, citing the ongoing investigation. But their ages match and previous court records Amanda Porter-Eley’s name is also listed as Amanda L. Porter.

Porter-Eley was convicted in Virginia of impersonating a registered nurse and working as a nursing supervisor for six months without the necessary licenses, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The nurse he was impersonating at the time was living out of state in New York, prosecutors said.

According to the Department of Justice, starting in September 2015, Porter-Eley used the nurse’s stolen identity to open multiple bank accounts and obtain more than $450,000 in cash, loans, goods and services, including at least three vehicles and one property. He continued to use fake IDs until his arrest in 2016, causing banks and retailers more than $120,000 in losses.

Porter-Eley also pleaded guilty to obtaining nearly $50,000 in worthless checks by opening bank accounts using other people’s Social Security numbers, according to the Justice Department.
