A two-year-old child died after a three-vehicle collision in Loves Park

A two-year-old boy from Machesney Park has died in a crash on Forest Hills Road.

The crash involving three vehicles occurred at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 5500 block of Forest Hills Road in Loves Park.

Deputies responded to the crash and found three adult passengers and two children with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Thursday news release from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.

One child was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition. The two-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s department’s accident reconstruction team (MCAT) responded to the scene. The Winnebago County Coroner’s office also responded.

According to the coroner’s preliminary investigation, the two-year-old child was a backseat passenger in the minibus that was rear-ended by a pickup truck. Due to the impact of the collision, the minibus crashed into another vehicle.

An autopsy revealed the two-year-old died from “blunt head trauma resulting from a motor vehicle accident,” according to the coroner’s office.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate the death.
