Search teams say young boy’s body was found in difficult terrain

Investigation into his death continues 5-year-old Joshua McCoyHis body was found Tuesday and subsequently transported by Coos County Search and Rescue coordinator Justin Gray.

Gray said one of his deputies notified him of the location of the body, and after being notified, Gray moved McCoy’s body out of the woods.

“This effort was made by my researchers, not by me,” Gray said. “I handle the overhead like planning, operations, logistics. I have a team that helps me with that, and every day we couldn’t find it, it felt like our efforts were wasted.”

Gray said there was no sign of McCoy for two and a half days.

“So I’m sad because he was supposed to be 6 this week, so a 6-year-old is no longer with us,” he said. “Did we miss something? We couldn’t find any clues as to the direction of travel, and that’s the hardest part of search and rescue.”

Gray said the area where McCoy’s body was found had difficult terrain.

“It was kind of on top of the hill, so you had to go up a little bit to get up there. “It was certainly bad terrain for all searchers.”

There are no new updates on the investigation at this time as the Coos County Sheriff’s Office continues to follow leads.

“Search officers are no longer at the home,” Coos County Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio said. “We’ve moved into more of an investigative mode. There’s still a lot of investigations going on; it’s going to take some time.”
