MLB.com Lists Seattle Mariners as a Destination for Top Free Agent Christian Walker

The Seattle Mariners are biding their time in the early stages of the offseason. The organization has yet to make a “big” move, but there are various rumors that the team includes players of all experience and skill levels.

The Mariners are linked to free agents Hye-Seong Kim and Roki Sasaki from the Korean Baseball Organization and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, respectively. Seattle It is also mentioned as a potential destination for players such as Pete Alonso, Yoan Moncada, Tanner Scott, Yandy Diaz and Justin Turner.

The Mariners also were linked to the three-time Gold Glove winner during the offseason. And on Thursday, another post continued to add more smoke to these rumors.

MLB.com recently named Seattle as one of six potential suitors for Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker. The other five clubs listed were the New York Yankees, Diamondbacks, New York Mets, Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants.

Walker had Arizona’s qualifying offer of $21.05 million extended by one year, leaving him free to take a deal or return to the team with which he spent eight seasons of his 10-year career.

Walker recently won his third consecutive Gold Glove award. He is coming off a season in which he hit .251 with 26 home runs and 84 RBIs. Walker hit at least .246 with 26 homers and 84 RBIs in three consecutive seasons. He surpassed the 30-point mark in 2022 and 2023.

Walker would provide much-needed strength to the Mariners lineup, and the combination of him and Luke Raley as a first baseman/designated hitter combo would be an intriguing combination.

The problem will be its cost. It’s unclear how much Seattle has set aside for free agency, but recent reports put it in the $20-25 million range. Walker has a three-year market cap of $66.165 million (22.1 million AAV). spotrac.

Walker would be an upgrade at the position, but his deal would use nearly all of the Mariners’ reported available offseason funds. This would also make him the highest-paid position player on the team.

The Mariners also have needs at second and third base and may need to rearrange their bullpen with five relievers for arbitration.

But if Seattle can shell out enough money to sign Walker, it would be the crown jewel of the team’s offseason.
