PECO billing issue affects thousands of customers | Here’s how it’s handled

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (WPVI) — Dozens of consumers continue to complain to Action News Troubleshooters about not receiving a notification PEKO invoice months later.

Some of these consumers are waiting for their bills for up to six months. When they finally regain their balance, they experience sticker shock. So we reached out to PECO to get some answers.

Cheryl Thomas of Springfield, Delaware County, hasn’t received a bill since May.

“I kept calling them every few weeks, sitting online, on hold for 30, 35, 40 minutes,” he said.

And he’s not alone. Steve Ritter, Berwyn, Chester County, is in the same boat.

Some customers say their PECO bills haven’t been coming in correctly for months, and despite numerous requests for help, the company has been unable to pay.

“So we did not receive a gas or electric bill for June, July, August, September and October,” Ritter said.

And when a bill comes, it’s huge. One consumer said he owed Troubleshooters $1,000.

“While we resolve billing issues that caused delays, some customers may receive higher bills than they expected over multiple months,” PECO’s Tom Brubaker said. “We switched to the new customer information system and currently have nearly 10,000 customers whose invoices are 30 days or more overdue.”

PECO asks our viewers to keep in mind that it sends out 1.7 million invoices each month. It also says it is taking new measures to help affected consumers.

“We recognize that billing issues can be really frustrating for our customers, so we work closely with them, waiving late fees and offering payment arrangements for up to 12 months if they need it. We’re also assisting our customers with expanded staffing.”

PECO announced that it has added 60 new employees and created a new email address where customers can directly send billing questions. The address is [email protected].

When will the remaining 10,000 customers be invoiced again?

“We’re working on these every day. More customers are getting invoices, so it’s an ongoing process,” says PECO.
