Owners Cara and Colin McBurnie searched the local area but found no sign of Beans, leaving the couple fearing the worst.

Ms McBurnie said Beans “went out normally as he liked to go for walks” but “always came home for something to eat, usually a few hours later”.

“We searched and searched and looked everywhere,” the 40-year-old added. “I was looking outside every day, but I thought something must have happened to him.

“I didn’t really expect to see him again but I joined a lot of local lost and found Facebook pages, then went further afield in Scotland.”

Weeks later the McBurnies received a call from the charity Cats Protection saying Beans had been found safe thanks to his microchip. in Coventry – hundreds of kilometers away.

Kelly Ryan, who spotted the unruly cat, said she noticed Beans “walking around” the outside litter box.

She said: “I didn’t feed him straight away as I thought he probably had the owner, then one night I saw him sleeping in the cat kennel and the next day and the day after that he was still there.

“I gave him a few biscuits to start with, but I heard he was going to visit his other neighbors and I felt like he was around too much and something wasn’t right.”

Ms Ryan posted about the missing cat online and contacted Cats Protection, who then reached out to Ms McBurnie.
