Teen arrested for arson that started 52-acre wildfire in South Jersey

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with felony arson for starting a wildfire that covered 52 acres in South Jersey, police said.

The Marlton teenager, who police did not identify because he is a minor, was arrested Nov. 7 for allegedly starting the fire on Oct. 30 near Sycamore Drive, which borders Berlin Township in Evesham Township, Evesham Township Police said in a statement on Facebook. mail

Firefighters from the Evesham Fire Department and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, along with Evesham County police, battled the blaze for several days. No nearby structures were damaged, police said.

Police said investigators found evidence that the teen intentionally started the fire. It was unclear how authorities determined the teenager started the fire.

The teenager was also charged with causing or risking extensive injury or damage, police said. He is being held at the Middlesex Juvenile Detention Center pending his first court appearance.

Authorities are also investigating whether the fire that burned 375 acres in the Sycamore Drive area on Nov. 7 is related to the fire on Oct. 30. As with the Oct. 30 blaze, it took firefighters days to get the blaze under control and no structures were damaged, police said.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the Evesham Police Department at 856-983-1116 or the department’s confidential tip line at 856-983-4699.
