Officials said that a 50-year-old woman who disappeared for 2 days while hiking was rescued.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (Gray News) – Authorities in California say they successfully found and rescued a 50-year-old hiker who was missing for almost two days.

According to a release Volunteers with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team found the woman in rural San Diego County early Sunday morning after an hours-long search.

Deputies with the sheriff’s Rural Enforcement Unit said they received a call from the woman’s family Saturday afternoon. The family said they had not heard from the woman since she sent them a message around 8.30am on Friday morning.

The woman reportedly told them she was about to start hiking near the Lake Morena campground in Campo.

During the investigation, deputies said they were notified from San Diego County Parks and Recreation that the woman had missed check-out time at her lakeside cabin.

Park officials also said his belongings were still in the cabin. His vehicle was found a short time later near a footpath.

While Search and Rescue volunteers were called to the area to help search for the woman, a helicopter also searched from above.

While park officials were searching the trails with an all-terrain vehicle, a two-person team and a search and rescue dog were also dispatched to the area.

Search and Rescue volunteers began following tracks just before 22:00 on Saturday, where they thought they found the woman’s shoe print.

During the search, volunteers shouted the woman’s name, hoping to get a response.

The response came just after 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Volunteers heard a woman screaming and eventually found her in a steep, rocky area almost 10 miles from her vehicle just before 5 a.m.

Authorities said the woman was exhausted but in good condition.

Due to the difficult terrain conditions, volunteers stayed with the woman until the helicopter pulled her to safety around 8 a.m.

He was then flown to the Lake Morena campground, where he received medical treatment and was eventually reunited with his family.

The sheriff’s office said it wanted to thank all the volunteers and organizations who helped get the woman to safety.
