Departure of Historic Ship SS United States from Philly Delayed Again

The highly anticipated departure of the historic SS United States from Philadelphia has been delayed once again due to several last-minute logistics knots.

The journey of the iconic ship, which was originally set to leave the Philly port on Friday, November 15, was postponed due to a tropical disturbance developing in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the second time the departure has been delayed due to a storm.

A new departure date has not been set, but when finally given the green light, the SS United States will embark on a two-week cruise to Mobile, Alabama, to begin a new form of service. Last month, officials in Florida’s Okaloosa County secured the ship to turn it into an artificial reef, hoping to boost diving tourism along the Panhandle coast.

When the ship finally sets sail, both the Walt Whitman and Commodore Barry bridges will close as the ship retreats to open waters. The SS United States will also pass under the Delaware Memorial Bridge, but traffic disruptions there are expected to be minimal.

Dubbed “America’s Flagship,” the SS United States has been docked in Philadelphia since 1996. The SS United States Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that has overseen the ship since 2011, met with Florida officials last month to formalize the sale. After arriving in Alabama, the ship will undergo a year of preparatory work before settling into its new life as an underwater target.
